On the Hill

Description

Traveling along the beautiful beach road from Monterey to San Francisco in Spring 2015, I found a small hill by the highway, and walking up it, noticed a pathway lined with poppies and traces of water on the road. Under the sunny and a bit windy weather, the wild bushes had bent in the wind. I wanted to capture the impression straight away and finished the painting a month or so later.

Subjugate Painting
Painting: Oil on Canvas. Hands are significant in dislocating the connection an audience would normally encounter with a traditional portrait.
The painting seeks to allow an audience to create their own narrative to the male and female subjects. What is happening? Why cover the eyes and mouth? What are their functions? I would hope the questions lead to other questions to create a scene or moment for the viewer.
This painting used Old Holland and Michael Harding professional oil paints. The ground is 10oz acrylic primed canvas with responsibly sourced 4.4cm deep stretcher bars.
