About Artist

Rene Bachrach Kristofic

I was born in Zagreb. Live and work in Zagreb and Wiena. All of my work derives from my personal experience of being diagnosed with a terminal disease. The main theme of all of my work is - the end. End representing death, end of a period in life, childhood's end, end of the world. During my treatment, from something abstract, the end has become something very real to me, and it started to intrigue me. My work consists of painting cycles that always contain elements from my life. The cycles often appear as scenes from a comic book, or I use comic books as a source of inspiration. I'm also inspired by other media, such as movies or music and books. In particular, I'm intrigued by classical SF literature (Stanislaw Lem, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Arthur C. Clark) and punk-rock culture of the 80's (works of Robert Longo). I also use comic strip and film framing and make use of the multiplicity of options to set my canvases within an exhibition area so that it allows various possibilities of interpreting a story. In addition, the possibility to place the canvases like triptychs with all possible combinations brings about a process where ''new'' paintings continue to appear within a composition, which allows the observer to find himself a story center of his own. Education: 2003. graduated from the School of applied Arts and Design in Zagreb 2009. graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb

Subjugate Painting
Painting: Oil on Canvas. Hands are significant in dislocating the connection an audience would normally encounter with a traditional portrait.
The painting seeks to allow an audience to create their own narrative to the male and female subjects. What is happening? Why cover the eyes and mouth? What are their functions? I would hope the questions lead to other questions to create a scene or moment for the viewer.
This painting used Old Holland and Michael Harding professional oil paints. The ground is 10oz acrylic primed canvas with responsibly sourced 4.4cm deep stretcher bars.
